People like achieving and being part of a club. Scratch the surface and almost everybody is good and wants to do the right thing if only they knew how. Planet Mark’s mission was to translate this into language and measurable tasks that did not feel daunting such that today Planet Mark has a legion of members and supporters all of whom support each other and are proud of their direction of travel.

This is important because it has all been fitness training to move exponentially from step-by-step moments to a philosophical change. As our mutual friend Bill McDonough (author of Cradle to Cradle) says, now is the time to look at what was CSR which became ESG and ask of ourselves, what are we doing still looking at schemes to do less bad? This still adds up to a bad.

Planet Mark’s great gauntlet, thrown down in joyous challenge to us all is how do we start from a position of let’s do good not less bad. Let us recognise that this psychological change could and should mark the beginning of a new Green Enlightenment and the discovery that far from being about pleasure foregone and the need to war hair shirts in a joyless world, it is a gateway to a new world where we give ourselves agency, where citizen trumps consumer, but a world of new commercial and civic opportunities open up such that in twenty years’ time we will not believe we were ever frightened of leaving behind a world we knew for a new one, especially when the present is so full of anxiety.

To end may I share with you two pieces of graffiti. The first on a wall as you go over the Severn Bridge into Wales “Some open minds should be closed for repair” and secondly an absolutely cracking piece from a wall in Bristol “If you think change is frightening, try irrelevance!”

Zero carbon is a great target, even if many of us will need to exceed that in order to bring team UK to the podium, but we can do this. Let us make like an avalanche and go from a whisper to a thunderous roar. We’re with you.”
